District 68 is a 2005 Ford
Excursion that serves as a mobile command center used for most one & two
alarm incidents/events. Currently there is only one person assigned to each
District Chief Unit: the District Chief. In the past, HFD assigned each District
Chief an Engineer/Operator to drive them and help with various administrative
& operational functions. This is not the case now, however.
One of the most important pieces of equipment on all District Chief Units is
the GRACE Electronic Accountability System. This wireless electronic computer
tracks each firefighter at an incident. Each firefighter has a T-PASS style
alert/alarm transmitter on them at all times. In the event of an emergency, the
firefighter can signal command for help, as well as the command base can signal
all firefighters on scene to evacuate the structure due to potential collapse,
flashover, or other emergency un-foreseen to those inside the structure.
The District Chief Unit also carries the RIT kit. RIT stands for
Rapid
Intervention
Team. At any fire or event where firefighters have to enter an IDLH (
Immediate
Danger to
Life &
Health) environment, HFD protocols
require that a RIT must be in place at the entrance of the IDLH in case of an
emergency. This is so that if the firefighters inside the IDLH become injured
or lost, the RIT will be ready within seconds to make entry and rescue them.
The RIT kit consists of all the tools needed to help give the RIT the best odds
of saving those firefighters inside. Some of these tools include a spare SCBA
air-bottle with regulator and face-piece, entry-way beacon & siren, and
various hand tools such as a crash-axe, screw-drivers, bolt-cutters, and
tin-snips.
