ALS Squad
ALS Squad 68 is a 2007 Chevrolet 3500 Heavy Duty with a Fraizer custom mount cab, that was delivered to Fire
Station 68 in late 2007. They are affectionately called "dog catchers" as they resemble the same style vehicle used by most of the local Animal Enforcement agencies.
This design had be under field testing beginning in 2005 with the first large order coming in 2007, and initial mixed reviews from the Paramedics assigned to them. Once taking delivery however, most begin to like the modularized compartments, as well as new features, like the new onboard portable refrigerator used to store temperature sensitive drugs.
Squad 68 is staffed with three Paramedics. One Paramedic is an E/O and
the other two are Firefighters. Fire Station 68 was one of the first
"rotation" stations in the city where the assigned Paramedics are
allowed to rotate every third work day on to one of the fire apparatus.
68's is also a popular home for training Paramedic students due to the
types and volume of calls made.
Squad 68 is one of the the busiest ALS units in the city, and has been for some
time. In 2002, Medic 68, a transport ALS unit, was converted to BLS
Ambulance 68 and the first Squad 68 was placed in service. The first
squad was a late model Chevrolet Suburban. Squad 68 responded to nearly
6,200 EMS & Fire calls in 2005. That averages out to 17 runs a day.
If you were to ask any of 68's Paramedics, they'll tell you that 17
runs was a "good day".
